The Norman J. Boudreau Story

A Lasting Legacy

Fitchburg, MA – May 19, 2023 – The Lasting Legacy article series celebrates key individuals and moments in IC’s storied history.

For over 94 years, IC Credit Union has been centered at the core of our community’s financial wellness. Since our founding in 1928, we’ve proudly supported the people of our communities by providing exceptional financial services supported by a team of understanding, wise, and empowered individuals who genuinely care about their well-being and progress.

One of the most influential members of the IC family who lives this mantra to this very day is Norman Boudreau. Affectionately called “Mr. B,” Norman has been involved with IC Credit Union for over 61 years – that’s not a typo.

Mr. B originally started with IC in March of 1963 as Treasurer. He was drawn to the credit union concept of “people helping people” and already had a background in financial services having worked at Commercial Credit in Worcester. Norman was well known for his deep passion for helping the member. You could often find him in the lobby personally welcoming people into the branch. He insisted that his office was on the first floor, never on the second or third. He wanted to ensure that the members of IC always had access to him at any time, even going as far as listing his office number in the public phonebook. “If they had an issue – that’s not their problem, that’s my problem! And I loved it.”

In 1986, IC became a federally chartered Credit Union and Norman was named President & CEO, a title he held for over three decades until retiring in 2008. During his 32 years as CEO, he led the credit union to new heights of growth, increasing our asset size nearly ten times, opened four new branches throughout the Central Mass area, and championed giving back over $10 million throughout the communities that IC serves. After his retirement in 2008, Mr. B joined IC’s Board of Directors, where he currently serves as Secretary & Financial Officer.

Norman was born in 1933, and just celebrated his 90th birthday. He was raised in Gardner, Mass. where he met his wife Carol of 62 years and attended Clarke University having served two years in the Army during that time. He’s a proud father of 4, grandfather of 9, and great grandfather of 8. Growing up, Norman enjoyed ice skating and playing broom hockey. Today, you can often find Mr. B sitting in his lawn chair in the front yard so he can watch the traffic or talk to people when they stop by to visit. Or, you’ll see him in the community continuing his commitment to the many worthwhile charities in our area.

A fund was created to honor the many years of charitable work of Norman and Carol Boudreau that supports the Community Foundation’s General Endowment, which makes grants to a wide range of community causes. For more information, visit the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts.

Mr. B has been, and continues to be, one of the most influential members of the IC family. With his strong leadership, devout loyalty to our members, employees and their families, and genuine passion for helping people. Norman J. Boudreau has set a historic example that the credit union consistently strives to follow to this day.
